Who we are

The Basque Academy of Law arose from a proposal made at the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Real Sociedad Bascongada de los Amigos del País on 29 November 2002, which was unanimously accepted.

It was constituted with its own legal personality by a deed granted on 9th June 2003, when the founding members ceased to be members and the first Board of Directors was constituted.

OBJECTIVES

In accordance with Article 2 of the Statutes, the Academy aims to study, research and disseminate Legal Sciences, especially those related to Basque Law through the Spanish Constitution, the Statute of Autonomy of the Basque Country and the regulations issued by the autonomous and foral bodies, as well as the applicable legal doctrine and jurisprudence and the traditional and current customs and traditions.

European Law is a preferential objective of our studies and the Board of Directors, following the proposal of the Treaty approving a Constitution for Europe, made a unanimous declaration in which it stated its intention to also dedicate its activity to the study of European institutions and European Law.

MEANS

In order to achieve this objective, the Academy shall carry out and promote all kinds of studies, conferences and working sessions and, where appropriate, publish the works and results obtained by its members or by individuals, entities and working groups that contribute to a better knowledge and application of Basque Law (art.2, second paragraph of the Statutes).

ACADEMICS

Membership of the Academy is open to all law graduates who request it from the Board of Directors, with full rights as long as they fulfil their social duties. The annual membership fee is sixty euros.

REGISTERED OFFICE

Bilbao Bizkaia Kutxa has made available to us a large building at Alameda Recalde 8, Bilbao, where our registered office is located.

FINANCING

The Academy has been set up with the effort of all of us, with the important help of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, which in 2004 financed our activities with fifty thousand euros. The help of the B.B.K. with the cession and fitting out of the premises where we have our headquarters also deserves to be mentioned.
